Communion Sunday Banner 2021

Dear Family at Christ Community,

This Sunday we will hear Paul’s aching heart for the Jews who don’t yet know Christ as Savior in Romans 9:1-5.  We will see that his humbled conscience and heart for his brothers and sisters have been shaped by the work of the Holy Spirit as evidence of his union with Christ.  Paul isn’t satisfied with being eternally loved by God himself; he longs for his fellow Jews to know this same joy even if it proves costly to him. Adolf Schlatter in Romans: The Righteousness of God captures the paradox of having the greatest of joy in being eternally loved by God while also sorrowing over those who don’t have this joy who will revile the one who sorrows:

In the assurance of the love of God (Paul) has just proclaimed Christianity’s triumph (in Romans 8), without conflicting with his unceasing anguish (in 9:1-5). Indeed, suffering together with Christ is part and parcel of the relationship with Christ that fills him with exultation (8:17). The torment caused by Israel’s fall is part of the suffering he bears for the sake of Christ.

Please pray for the broken bread to remind you of the sacrifice of Christ in giving His body for you to taste of the joy of being free of shame, guilt, and fear of God’s judgment. Pray also for the overflowing cup to fill you with the power of Christ to love and suffer for those who don’t yet know this redemptive joy in your spheres of influence. May the Spirit form our consciences and hearts further into the image of Christ as we serve as ambassadors of reconciliation!

In Christ,
Cameron
