The Crucifixion of the King: It is Finished

March 20, 2016 Preacher: Series: The Passion of the Christ in the Gospel of John

Scripture: John 19:14–30

Key Truth: God’s redemptive sovereignty and Jesus’ finished work provide salvation in full to be received by grace alone through faith alone.

Introduction:

Q: What do you contribute to your salvation?

Behold Your King!

John 19:14-22

“…Pilate’s malice serves God’s ends. The Lord Jesus is indeed the king of the Jews; the cross is the means of his exaltation and the very manner of his glorification. Even the trilingual notice may serve as a symbol for the proclamation of the kingship of Jesus to the whole world…. Thus the two men most actively and immediately responsible for Jesus’ death, Caiaphas (11:49-52) and Pilate, are unwittingly furthering God’s redemptive purposes, unwittingly serving as prophets of the King they execute.”

D. A. Carson, The Gospel According to John

Q: Who is truly your king based on what most influences how you live in the various areas of your life?

Behold, Your Son! Behold, Your Mother!

John 19:23-27

“Jesus is not only taking care of his mother and his friend in filial and fraternal loyalty, he is, more significantly, creating the New Family of the people of God, the community of those who will bear faithful witness to him in the huge surrounding world from now on.”

Frederick Dale Bruner, The Gospel of John: A Commentary

Q: How has Christ blessed you through your inclusion and participation in the broader family of God?

It is Finished!

John 19:28-30

“In this word, ‘It is finished,’ will I comfort myself. I am forced to confess that all my finishing of the will of God is imperfect, piecemeal work, while yet the law urges on me that not so much as one tittle of it must remain unaccomplished. Christ is the end of the law. What it requires, Christ has performed.”

Martin Luther, quoted in J.C. Ryles’s Expository Thoughts on the Gospel of John

Q: Do you live in the freedom of the finished work of Christ on your behalf? What are some of the regular temptations and challenges for you to this freedom?

John 19:14-30 teaches us that:

-God is sovereign and Christ is King over the rulers and mobs of this world who will both serve His ends in the end

-Jesus’ death forms a new community for the purpose of His mission

-Jesus fulfilled all that was necessary to glorify God through the finished salvation of His sons and daughters

“All that was necessary for man’s salvation was now effected. Nothing remained to be done, in order to the perfecting of his work on earth, or to the forming of a perfect ground for man’s acceptance with God. It is true, that man must repent: but he need not to repent in order to make satisfaction for his sins: no repentence of man can add to the value of Christ’s sacrifice.”

Charles Simeon, Horae Homileticae, Vol. 14: John XIII to Acts
