The Gift of the Holy Spirit

April 23, 2017 Preacher: Series: The Gift of the Holy Spirit

Scripture: John 16:5–15

Key Truth: The Holy Spirit serves as a gift to God’s people as both a sign and seal of God’s fulfilled redemptive promises and a guide for living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Introduction:

Q: What have been the greatest helps for you so far in your Christian walk? Who provided them?

“…we show a great deal more interest in the gifts of healing and tongues—gifts of which, as Paul pointed out, not all Christians are meant to partake anyway (1 Cor 12:28-30)—than in the Spirit’s ordinary work of giving peace, joy, hope, and love, through the shedding abroad in our hearts of knowledge of the love of God. Yet the latter is much more important than the former.”

J.I. Packer, Knowing God

The Gift of A Sign and Seal of God’s Redemptive Promises Fulfilled:

John 16:5-11

“The many biblical promises that the Spirit will characterize the age of the kingdom of God breed anticipation. But this saving reign of God cannot be fully inaugurated until Jesus has died, risen from the dead, and been exalted to this Father’s right hand, returned to the glory he enjoyed before the world began.”

D.A. Carson, The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel According to John

Q: What are some ways in which the Holy Spirit comforts you with the God’s fulfilled redemptive promises?

The Gift of A Guide to Live Out the Gospel of Jesus Christ:

John 16:12-15

“…all are to glorify Christ [through the office of the Holy Spirit] by a holy conversation, and are to take of his virtues and his graces, and to exhibit them to the world. This is one end of their calling, namely, “to shew forth the virtues of him that hath called them out of darkness into his marvelous light.” All are to “shine as lights in the world, holding forth the word of life” in their own conduct, so that all may read it, yea, may be compelled to read it, as transcribed in their lives.”

Charles Simeon, Horae Homileticae, Vol. 14: John XIII to Acts

Q: What are some ways in which the Holy Spirit guides you in living out the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

John 16:5-15 teaches us that the Holy Spirit:

-is a gift from God signifying the fulfillment of His redemptive promises in Christ

-primarily guides God’s people in living out the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ
