Freedom in Christ

October 8, 2017 Preacher: Robby Baxter Series: The Letter to the Colossians

Scripture: Colossians 2:16–23

Key Truth: In union with Christ, you are free to enjoy newness of life apart from lifeless rules and regulations.

Q: What does it mean to be free in Christ?

Holding Fast to the Head

Colossians 2:16-19

“The whole aim of Paul is for the fullest, deepest and most watchful holiness.  He wants his Colossian converts above all things to be holy; that is, to live a life yielded all through to their Redeemer, who is also their Master.”

Handley Moule, Colossians Studies

Q: What does it mean to hold fast to Jesus?  How can we help each other to do this? How has worship and fellowship with other Christians helped you to grow in knowing and living out of your union with Christ?

Stopping the Indulgence of the Flesh

Colossians 2:20-23

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 3:12-14

Q: How has your understanding of your union with Christ helped you in stopping the indulgence of the flesh?  Do you often think over the difference in your life belonging to Jesus makes?  What role does this play in your growth as a Christian?

Colossians 2:16-23 teaches us that:

-We are free to hold fast to Jesus as we grow in our knowledge of God and obedience to Him.

-We must not submit to the slavery of human regulations that have no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.
