Jesus Christ, Our Redeeming Light

December 3, 2017 Preacher: Series: Advent 2017: The Gospel of John

Scripture: John 1:4–13

Key Truth: Jesus Christ is the true redeeming light sent by God to make us His sons and daughters by faith according to His sovereign will.

Introduction:

What is truly life giving to you that you want to share with others?

Jesus Christ, Our Light:

John 1:4-8

“[The life was the light of men.] This sentence means that the life which was in Christ, was intended before the fall to be the guide of man’s soul to heaven, and the supply of man’s heart and conscience, — and that since the fall of man it has been the salvation and the comfort of all who have been saved.”

J.C. Ryle, Expository Thoughts on the Gospels:
Volume Three: John 1:1-John 10:30

What are some ways that you have experienced the light of Christ shining through and not being overcome by the darkness? How are you bearing witness to this?

Redemption by Faith Alone in Christ Alone According to God’s Grace Alone:

John 1:9-13

“Believing says it all, does it all, receives all that is given, motivates all that issues from it, and is as simple and as concrete as the person Jesus of Nazareth, who, like believing, needs no supplementation. Jesus did it all. Believing receives it all This is the Gospel according to John. (Solus Christus, sola fide.).”

Frederick Dale Bruner, The Gospel of John: A Commentary

What is your story of having received and believed in Christ to become a child of God? Who was ultimately responsible for bringing together all the elements of this story for your redemption in Christ?

John 1:4-13 teaches us that Jesus is:
-the true redeeming light that has defeated the darkness
-sent by God to make us His sons and daughters by faith according to His sovereign will

“Now Jesus did many other things in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

John 20:30-31
