The Pollution of the Lineage and the Cleansing Flood

December 9, 2018 Preacher: Matthew O'Sullivan Series: Advent 2018: The Promise of Christ in Genesis

Scripture: Genesis 6:1–10, Genesis 8:20–22, Genesis 9:1–7

Key Truth: Amidst the corruption of the world, God faithfully preserves the seed of Eve until the victorious advent of Christ

How is the corruption of the world weighing on you this Advent season?

The Wickedness of Man and the Grace of God

Genesis 6:1-10

“The earth no longer honored its Creator King; it was no longer a manifestation of the good kingdom of God. It grieved God to see this corruption of his beautiful creation. . . . The heavenly Judge has seen the evidence of diabolical evil and pronounces sentence. But God’s judgment is infused with redeeming grace. God intends to save a remnant.”

Sydney Greidanus, Preaching Christ from Genesis: Foundations for Expository Sermons

What do you find attractive in life?
Why do you find it attractive and what does that
reveal about your heart?

Humanity Protected and the Covenant Continued

Genesis 8:20-9:7

“Even though the human heart is inclined to evil, God graciously sends his people out into the world again under his blessing. But things have changed. The peaceful harmony between creatures is broken. God now makes provision for his creatures in a broken world.”

Sydney Greidanus, Preaching Christ from Genesis: Foundations for Expository Sermons

How does God’s care and concern for His image-bearers affect you and shape the way you treat others?

The Sign of God’s Goodness and Faithfulness

Genesis 9:8-17

“It is no accident that the throne of the righteous Judge of heaven and earth is depicted as having ‘a rainbow about the throne, like an emerald to look upon’ (Rev. 4:3). What a joy it should be to the true sharer of God’s covenantal grace in Christ that the sign and seal of God’s good purposes arches the place of his final disposition.”

Palmer Robertson, The Christ of the Covenants

How has God shown you signs of His goodness and faithfulness this past year?

Genesis 6:1-10; 8:20-9:17 teaches us that:

God is faithful to preserve the seed of Eve until the victorious advent of Christ despite the corruption of the world

God’s care for His image-bearers should lead us to love others

God gives us many signs of His goodness and faithfulness in order to hold us fast in amidst the corruption of the world
