The Victorious Resurrection and Reign of Christ

March 22, 2020 Preacher: Series: Advent & Easter: (Part 2) The Victorious Comings of Christ in John's Revelation

Scripture: Revelation 19:11–21

Key Truth:
Jesus was victorious over Satan in His resurrection which inaugurated His reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Introduction:

What impact is the present array of cultural, political, and physical crises having on your faith in Christ?

“The seventh section, chapters 20-22, narrates the doom of the dragon, thus completing the description of the overthrow of the enemies of Christ. In addition, it describes the final judgment, the final triumph of Christ and his church, and the renewed universe, here called the new heaven and the new earth.”Anthony A. Hoekema, “Amillennialism”,

in The Meaning of the Millennium: Four Views, ed. by Robert G. Clouse

The Defeat of Satan and the Millenial Reign of Christ:

Revelation 20:1-3

“The resurrection of Christ is the great spiritual watershed for the nations. Satan no longer has free rein to deceive the nations, and this is good news to the Gentiles….But it is also good news to the church: not until the “short time” at the end, determined by God in his sovereign plan of the ages, can there be a world power or coalition with the potential to erase the people of God from the earth, as Egypt, and Babylonia, Persia, Hellenistic Syria, under Antiochus, and Rome could have done.”

Dennis E. Johnson, Triumph of the Lamb: A Commentary on Revelation

Do you believe that Christ reigns now victorious over Satan?
What serves as the true
evidence of Christ’s present reign?

The First Resurrection and the Co-Reign of the Martyrs in Christ:

Revelation 20:4-6

“John’s emphasis on the “first resurrection” that brings both life and vindication offers incentive to readers to “be faithful until death” in the confidence that Christ will give them “the crown of life” (2:10). He insists that God may subject his opponents to the punishment that is “the second death” but will vindicate the faithful, who will reign with Christ (2:11). Such a message is designed to promote faithful endurance (13:10; 14:12), not to make readers despair of grace. Eternal life belongs to all whose names are included in the Lamb’s book of life, not only to a select spiritual elite.”

Craig R. Koester, Revelation & the End of All Things

Do you believe that suffering with and for Christ even unto death grants eternal blessing greater than dwelling safely and securely in this life?

Application:

Revelation 20:1-6 teaches us that:
-Satan was defeated at the resurrection of Christ which inaugurated His reign as King
-those who suffer with and for Christ even unto to death will reign with Him

Benediction:

Revelation 22:6-7
