In Preparation for the Lord's Supper

Dear Family in Christ,

As we conclude our sermon series on the Redemptive Story in Romans, we will partake of the Lord’s Table this Sunday. We will have the opportunity to focus on a unique aspect of communion as our time of worship will celebrate Restoration in which all things will be made new. The Lord’s Table points forward to this glorious reality and serves to strengthen our longing for the final barriers to our reconciliation with God to be eternally removed. E.F. Kevan highlights this beautiful aspect of the Supper as he writes:

“The Lord left His disciples and He went up to where He was before. But His going away was not the end of hope, it was not the beginning of depression: because concerning Him there was not merely the faint hope, but the clearest teaching that He would come again. The Lord’s Supper, looking not only backwards to the cross, but also forward to the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, is the token and constant witness to the fact that the Lord Jesus is to return and that before us stretches out a vast prospect of glorious hope. The Lord’s Supper is the token of the Lord’s return…In fact, the Lord’s Supper is always saying, ‘Till He come’; ‘Till He come’.”

Take time this week to meditate on the fullness and completeness of the Gospel in the redemptive work of the Trinity to restore us as God’s children to our Heavenly Father. Give praise to God for providing all that we would need in the person and work of Jesus Christ and the provision of the Holy Spirit to be justified, progress in sanctification, and eventually be glorified at the return of Christ. Ask the Spirit to show you if there are any barriers such as sin for which you are unrepentant, unbelief in the Gospel, or unforgiveness toward another that would keep you from celebrating the joy of eventual restoration as represented in the Table. Seek to reconcile these things in the power of the Holy Spirit and counsel of the elders if needed so that you may share in the nourishing elements with your family this Sunday.

In Christ,
Cameron
