The Pilgrim’s Warning (Part 1): Beware False Teachers

October 28, 2018 Preacher: Series: The Pilgrim Letters: 1 & 2 Peter

Scripture: 2 Peter 1:1–16

Key Truth: We must beware false teachers who blaspheme God and exploit us for their own pleasure and gain by remembering His just judgment and faithful deliverance of the righteous in Christ.

Introduction:

What most grabs your attention and makes you think that something is true?

“The whole art of life is to be able to discriminate between the true and the false, and then to reject the false utterly and cleave to that which alone is ultimately true.”

Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Expository Sermons on 2 Peter

The Call to Beware False Teachers:

2 Peter 2:1-3

“If Christ is not in the center, He is being denied. He is either in the center or He is nowhere….And no one can give hope, either to the individual or to the world today, who is not centered absolutely upon the atonement. He is a false prophet and teacher.”

D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Expository Sermons on 2 Peter

Have you ever fallen for false teaching?
What was attractive about it?
What are you
doing to protect yourself from false teaching?

The Call to Remember God’s Just Judgment and Faithful Deliverance of the Righteous in Christ:

2 Peter 2:4-16

“The immorality their teaching permitted was, no doubt, largely a relapse into the ways of pagan society, always a strong temptation in the early Christian churches. But in a society where every opportunity of maligning Christians and Christianity was taken, Christians whose moral standards were no higher than their pagan neighbors’ were a scandal. Instead of witnessing to their neighbors, they were bringing discredit on the Christian way of life.”

Richard Bauckham, Word Biblical Commentary: Jude-2 Peter

In what ways does the guarantee of God’s just judgment and faithful deliverance of the righteous in Christ affect your views of worship, discipleship, and how you live in the world?

Application:

2 Peter 2:1-16 teaches us that we are called to:
beware false teachers who blaspheme God and exploit us for their own pleasure and gain
remember God’s just judgment and faithful deliverance of the righteous in Christ
