Communion Letter: April 2nd
Dear Family at CCC,
This Sunday we will have the privilege of partaking of the Lord’s Table. It will be especially encouraging to our faith to receive this means of grace after we have heard from our text in John 19:16-37 about the crucifixion of Jesus. The broken bread and poured-out cup will speak a visible word that the story about Jesus’s crucified body and shed blood is the good news of salvation to all who put their faith in Him.
The more we consider Jesus, nailed to the cross, mockingly hailed as the King of the Jews by the inscription hung over Him, the more we sense the wonder of the good news of our salvation in Him. In his commentary on the Gospel of John, F.F. Bruce draws our attention to the amazing and glorious reality this episode of the Gospel declares to us:
“The Crucified One is the true King, the kingliest King of all; because it is He who is stretched on the cross, He turns an obscene instrument of torture into a throne of glory and ‘reigns from the tree.’”
The deeper we go in our understanding of this truth, the more we feel our need of the Lord’s help to confirm it to our hearts and minds, because we are so often slow to believe. So, as we prepare to partake of the Table this Sunday, let’s ask the Lord to use this means of grace to strengthen our faith in Jesus. Let’s come expecting that our joy in the Gospel will be increased. Let’s make it our aim to grow in our confidence in King Jesus, the One who “reigns from the tree,” so that we will cling to Him alone for salvation to the very end of our days.
In Christ,
Robby
