Dear Family at CCC,

This Sunday we will have the privilege of partaking of the Lord’s Table. Because Jesus has given us this means of grace to sustain our faith in Him, it will be a fitting complement to our sermon text from Matthew 28:16-20, which will teach us about the initiatory rite of baptism. While Jesus once-for-all marks us as His own in baptism, He continues to nourish us as His own by the bread and cup at His Table.

In his commentary on Matthew, Knox Chamblin comments on the special way the Table helps us to experience Jesus’ sustaining presence with us:

“The risen Jesus supplants the Jerusalem temple as the place of worship; and the persons who are united to Him have themselves become a temple whose primary purpose is to worship and to glorify the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Where people assemble in Jesus’ name, He Himself is ‘there…in their midst’ (Matt. 18:20), mediating between them and the Father. And when they celebrate the Lord’s Supper, they experience His holy presence and His redeeming grace in an exceptional way.”

Given this glorious reality, prepare your heart to come to worship in the confident expectation that Jesus will be with us, not far beyond us but in our midst. Ask the Spirit to open the eyes of your heart to a deeper sense of this reality. Ask the Lord to make you ready to partake of His table in the joyful knowledge that He will be faithful to His promise to be with us, even to the very end of the age.

In Christ,
Robby
