Communion Letter: July 23rd
Dear Family at Christ Community,
On Sunday, we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper as we conclude our series in Romans with Paul’s doxology in 16:25-27. He praises God for being able to use the preaching of the Gospel that appears to so many to be a foolish waste of time to strengthen the Roman saints as they share their faith in word and deed with their diverse neighbors. This inclusion of both Jews and the various Gentiles seems foolish to try given the risk of conflict between the disparate groups. However, it’s precisely this foolishness that lies at the heart of the mystery of the Gospel! Charles Hodge in his Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans correctly describes this mystery as beyond human comprehension:
“The gospel is a mystery, i.e., a system of truth beyond the power of the human mind to discover, which God has revealed for our faith and obedience. It was formed from eternity in the divine mind, revealed by the prophets and apostles, and the preaching of Jesus Christ; and is, by the command of God, to be made to all nations, vers. 25, 26.”
The elements of the Lord’s Table help display this mystery to us. How can something as common and simple as the bread and cup signify and seal the eternal truths of our redemption in Christ? How can the death of One with so little a display of power who looks so little like a king purchase forgiveness for us? How can death give way to life in the resurrection power of the blood of Christ? These are indeed mysteries! Gloriously they have been revealed and continue to be revealed in each and every Lord’s Day Sabbath worship service and in the celebration of the sacraments so that we might share the Gospel with our family, friends, and neighbors.
Please come to the Lord’s Table on Sunday in awe of the Lord’s ability to bring together a diverse group of people to be united in Christ and in worship of our loving Abba Father!
In Christ,
Cameron
